For my 1st Year Fine art 15 week project, I researched into the artist Aron Demetz, who specialises in creating amazing life size wood sculptures of the human figure, his artworks are highly technical using traditional wood carving techniques from the 17th century. Demetz work really caught my interest as he emphasizes the relationship between man and the environment and the way he explores the many different ways of distressing the wood which include burning the wood with fire, applying resins and shredding the surface of the sculptures.
I was particularly fond of his series of works called ‘Advanced Minorities’ 2012-2014 where he used different kind of woods like Maplewood and Limewood to create detailed carvings into the wood. After researching into Demetz, I decided I would push myself to make life size sculptures, I will experiment around with different materials like paper, plaster and metal to see which will give me the best results as well as testing out which material will give me the best toughness and strength to make a full sculpture with.
