For my 1st year Fine art Self Directed project, I decided to collaborate on a project about 'control'. We decided to make an interactive installation piece around a shadow puppet display, we both created a life size puppet with individual designs. Just like how a puppeteer has control of the strings as an artist we have control over the ideas we develop and the materials we use. I decided to go down a theatrical theme, with a narrative behind it about identity and expressions using theatre masks to express the emotion, as for my partner who went down a theme about nature and bold colour.

During my self directed project I researched an artist named Bohyun Yoon, who uses light to create an interesting puppet shadows. He uses doll parts and arranges them in a certain way so when the light shines on them they create a whole doll. I thought that this was such a clever idea and definitely wanted to involve some sort of arrangement of our life size puppets within the display, the idea that developed was that I wanted for our two puppets to cast the one shadow.
