For my 1st year Fine art Sound/Sculpture project, I had to create a sculpture from recordings of different sounds of our choice, whether the sounds themselves be the sculpture or whether it was something physical. The sounds I recorded where: Rolling dice, spoken words, charcoal on paper and drumming. I found it pretty difficult to get started, so I decided to look at Alvin Lucier, a sound artist. I found his work very intriguing as he recorded himself narrating a text into a room and the new recording is then played back and re-recorded, and this process is repeated until he found the resonance of the room.
.I was contemplating on which sound to use for my sculpture and I ran with the charcoal on paper sound. The sound of the charcoal was rough and had different pitches and levels within the recording. I looked at the recordings on the computer in particular the sound waves of when I was drawing with the charcoal, these waves were my initial sculpture thoughts, I tried around with patterns to create these waves in paper. I repeated over and over again a pattern I had folded into A1 size paper which I then displayed along my studio wall as my final piece which turned out really well and also got great feedback.
