For my 1st year Fine art Painting project, I had to create several paintings to do with Private, Public, Industrial and Domestic interiors. I decided to research about Damien Hirst for my Public interior, specifically his work called 'Pharmacy' 1992. I found his work very interesting as he used an environment that we are all familiar with; a chemist. He then created a deep narrative, expressing how most people believe in medicine and don’t believe in art, without questioning either.
I took inspiration from Damien Hirst using an everyday surrounding, so for my Public interior I used the Murray Library, a place that is regularly visited and somewhere with many narratives in the form of books. I took pictures of the long bookshelves, stacked with many different coloured books just like how the packages from the cabinets in the 'Pharmacy' 1992 had different designs and colours. In my paintings I looked into colour and how focusing on a specific section of a bookshelf can change the way you think about it.
