For my 1st year Fine art 15 week Self Directed project, I decided to do an entire project on Fragility. I started off my project by looking at the human figure, in particular poses that create a fragile and isolated feeling for example of people holding there legs in the foetal position. I wanted to experiment around with print making to create my images of fragile looking people, I experimented around with screen printing, lithography, dry point as well as embroidery.
Along side these prints I was experimenting around with new materials which were fragile, I created several paper and paper mache sculptures of my own body, casting my arms and legs. I also have used wire, cement, clay and plaster to create distressed looking figures. Materials such as plaster and concrete are strong and hard but they can also be brittle and fragile and I wanted to get that across in my sculptures. Some of the sculptures are broken, not intentionally.
My final piece is of a waste mould cast of my legs, I was hoping to create a life size figure of myself which would be poised in a fragile position, however time alluded me and I could only manage to get done up to the top of my thigh. The piece is made of plaster which unfortunately broke along the shin but instead of fixing it I left it as it fit in with the theme of fragility.
