I will be writing a section on Sophie-Anne Mitcheson’s crit, Sophie had a wide variety of resin sculptures which were displayed on top of a plinth, she also had some jelly prints that were on the wall behind. Sophie uses resin to preserve nature, she captures petals, leaves, sand and has played around with scenes trapped within the sculptures. Her artwork looks very delicate and is small to scale.
Sophie had used a range of experimentation from the size and shape of the sculptures, she also experimented with what she put inside the resin, I also noticed that she has tried to dye the resin using ink which was reasonably successful, the sculptures look fragile, but we were invited to touch them and pick them up to give them a closer look and from some people’s reactions they weren’t expecting them to be so robust and strong. The group mentioned that the resin sculptures looked like sweets and that they are very pretty and look like ornaments, someone mentioned that they would make a good pair of earrings or a big ring.
An interesting topic of discussion about these works was the sometimes unpredictability of the resin added a quality to the artwork that people found interesting, that the “mistake” outcomes were unique which made them special.
