I spoke to James about my work after the group crit and he mentioned an artist called Richard Woods that I might be interested in, I went away and researched his artwork. Wood’s is a British artist who trained as a sculpture but would rather think of his work in terms of surface. His architectural interventions are chiefly concerned with the resurfacing of existing structures, and they propose absurd twist on the cult of home improvement and DIY aesthetics.
I was interested in his woodcuts in particular, the prints are technical, precise, they are also vibrant and use bright colours, they are intriguing, there’s a quality to them that I enjoy. He engraves the pattern and design into the wood before printing them onto paper, this is something I would consider doing for my own project.
