Artwork Outdoors
I wanted to explore my artwork in another context, I took my plaster blocks outside and displayed them in a public and outdoor environment to see whether it would add a different quality or add/change the context of my artwork. Although this artwork was not designed to be outdoors as it was made of plaster which would ruin if it was left outside, it looked good outside the Priestman building. The white plaster bricks really stood out against the grassy environment, however passerbyers and fellow students who spotted me displaying my work preferred the coloured structures. I asked them why and they preferred the material and aesthetic quality to the coloured blocks, this was very interesting to me as I felt the white blocks were more sculptural. I displayed the blocks in a variety of variations, I made large and small structures, to see whether they could hold and demand the space. Where I displayed them felt right as they were on its on platform/pedestal, although my work was designed to sit directly on the floor they looked dominate on top of the wooden platform. In future if I was to make something outside, I would make it site specific and use a material that could withstand the environment and the weather, I would like to make some concrete blocks and try displaying it again outside to see if the quality would change again.
