Semester 2 Assessment Post
Since semester one I feel like I have a clearer, better understanding and focus of my ideas and the intentions behind my artwork. My ideas have definitely evolved and progressed since making my wood and resin sculptures, I have focused my attention on making plaster blocks in a variety of different shapes and sizes as well as different colours. I have done this so that I could test out a wide range of ideas and test different ways of displaying my artwork. Another huge factor to my work is the material quality and aesthetic qualities to my artwork, I have explored and experimented around in displaying my artwork in various locations including in the Shaun Project Space and in public environments to see whether changing the physical context would have an effect on my work.
Throughout semester two I have primarily worked with plaster as my chosen material, I chose this material for its material quality as well as the financial benefits of the material. The material is inexpensive and stretches very far, I can also experiment and add other materials such as acrylic into the mix to change the colour and the aesthetic quality to the artwork. I decided to stick with making sculptures but have dabbled in print making to explore and test out ideas. The majority of my artwork that I created are three dimensional and free standing so that the viewer can walk around and observe the piece from multiple angles. I also created wall pieces that were heavily influenced by the artist Donald Judd, I displayed graduating white to pink plaster blocks which were equally spaced and had a precision and accuracy to the artwork. This artwork was my favourite as it really dominated the space, it stood out and could hold its own within an environment.
This semester I have tried to develop my knowledge on artists working with the same themes as me. I have focused my research on mainly Minimalist artists who make sculptural artworks. I have been heavily influenced and inspired by the ideology and methodology of Sol LeWitt, Carl Andre and Richard Long but in particular Donald Judd. Researching heavily into Judd's thoughts and processes have really improved and developed my own artist practice, like Judd I have set myself specific guidelines and rules that I must follow when creating my artwork, for me I must have everything equal and precise.
